Cranky’s is the kind of bike shop a small town is lucky to have. It started in 2002 in a 400-square-foot garage out in rural Aldergrove, and after a few years it moved into a renovated farmhouse in the town’s commercial strip on 272 Street. It’s still independent. Their own FAQ makes a point of saying it’s locally owned and operated, and isn’t connected to any similarly named shop elsewhere.

What’s in the farmhouse

Bikes, mostly, and a lot of them. The showroom carries:

  • Norco, Trek, Rocky Mountain, Haro and Electra bikes, from kids’ first pedal bikes to trail, commuter and electric bikes
  • BMX parts, tires and scooters, which is a big part of the shop’s personality
  • Parts and accessories for keeping whatever you already ride on the road

The repair workshop is the other half of the business. They service regular bikes and the electric systems on e-bikes, including Bosch, Shimano and Rocky Mountain’s Powerplay motors. A new bike from them comes with a year of their New Bike Service Plan. As a price guide, the website listed a Norco Scene 2 at $799 when we checked.

The deal for growing kids

If you’ve ever bought a kid a bike that fit for about one summer, the Half Back program is the reason to shop here. A bike originally bought at Cranky’s can be traded toward the next size, for credit of up to half the original price. How much you get depends on the bike’s age and condition, so bring it in and ask.

Around town

The shop shows up for Aldergrove. Shortreed Community Elementary thanked Cranky’s this June for donating prizes to the school’s Bike/Roll to School Week, and the shop lists the Aldergrove Bike Jam, a food-bank bike program, Clothes2U and Cops for Cancer among the things it supports.

Before you go

Cranky’s is open Monday to Saturday, 9:30 to 5:30, and closed Sundays and statutory holidays. Call 604-856-1688 or email [email protected]. More Aldergrove independents are on Shop Local, and our Aldergrove guide covers what else to do in town.
