Sabà Cafe is the one that started it all: a green clapboard corner on Mavis Avenue with a red awning, flower pots and a few bistro chairs out on a little deck. Inside there’s a pastry counter, an espresso machine and a menu that runs from a 7 am flat white to a soup-and-sandwich lunch.
Coffee and baking
The espresso is an organic Sabà blend from Republica Roasters, who are also in Fort Langley. When we looked in late October, a flat white or a latte started at $4.75 and a Sabà drip coffee at $3. Matcha, mocha, chai and hot chocolate are on the list too, along with beer, cider and a short cocktail menu.
Their website says the food is made from scratch on site. The baking isn’t itemized on the menu page, so ask at the counter what’s out. Their own photos show cinnamon rolls, big sea-salt chocolate-chunk cookies and chocolate-dipped coconut macaroons.
Breakfast and lunch
Both are served from 7 am to 3 pm. Menu items we saw:
- Breakfast: a granola bowl with seasonal fruit, local honey and Greek yogurt ($16), a breakfast burrito ($14), smoked salmon toast on sourdough ($17.50), a French omelette
- Lunch: paninis (chicken pesto, or apple and brie), a kale Caesar, a chicken Caesar wrap, and a soup of the day with bread
- Grab and go: a cabinet of pre-made wraps, salads, bowls, yogurt parfaits, tiramisu and panna cotta, available until quantities run out
There’s a vegan burrito and panini, a kids’ grilled cheese ($10), and the menu flags the gluten-free and vegan options.
One family, three doors
Chef-owner Simone Hurwitz runs Sabà with her family. The cafe is joined by the Bistro on Glover Road, a two-minute walk away, for brunch, happy hour and dinner, and by a pizzeria and market on Mavis Avenue. The bistro doesn’t do takeout coffee, so if you’re grabbing one to go, this is the door.
Before you go
For a large or custom cake from their bakery, pre-order at least three days ahead by emailing [email protected]. For anything else, call 778-545-0024, extension 1, for the cafe.
