16748 50 Avenue, Surrey, BC, V3Z 1E2Cloverdale, Surrey (nearest BC SPCA centre to Langley)
People in Langley often assume the SPCA runs the shelter down the road. It doesn’t. The BC SPCA’s list of Lower Mainland and Fraser Valley locations includes Abbotsford, Burnaby, Chilliwack, Maple Ridge, Richmond, Surrey and a handful of others, but no Langley centre. The closest is in Cloverdale, Surrey. The animal shelter inside Langley is run by a different charity, the Langley Animal Protection Society, which has its own page: Langley Animal Protection Society (LAPS). Dog licences, lost pets and municipal animal control are covered in Animal control, lost pets and the LAPS shelter.
So what is the BC SPCA to a Langley household? Mostly three things: a helpline, a place to adopt from, and a way to help.
If you think an animal is in distress
Call the helpline on 1-855-622-7722. It covers farm, domestic and wild animals. The BC SPCA says it does not take cruelty or neglect reports by email or social media, and it does not act on anonymous complaints, though it says it protects the privacy of the details you give.
Have these ready: your own name, phone number and address; when you saw it; where, with an exact address if you have one; who was involved; and what you actually observed, described plainly (“the dog has no water and the bowl is empty” works better than “it’s being neglected”). Missing a detail is not a reason to hold off calling, per the BC SPCA. Outside helpline hours, its page points you to your local police or RCMP, and to the Conservation Officer Service for wildlife.
Adopting
The process on their site runs in order: browse the adoptable animals online, fill in a pre-adoption questionnaire for the one you like, visit during viewing hours, and collect your new pet once staff match you. Bring government-issued photo ID, and the person who applied should be the one who picks up. There are often many applications for a single animal, and the BC SPCA suggests applying for more than one if more than one has caught your eye. It does not keep waitlists.
Fees listed on the page today: cat $300, kitten $375, dog $500, puppy $625, rabbit $75, guinea pig $20, rats $10. Smaller pets, birds and farm animals have their own fees on the same page, which also spells out what each fee covers (spay or neuter, microchip and registration, first vaccines and so on). Check it before you go, because fees are the BC SPCA’s to change.
One practical point from the Surrey page: that centre mainly cares for cats, kittens and small animals. The Good Shepherd Barn there houses farm animals and can only be visited by appointment made ahead of time. The website’s adoptable animal search shows which centre each animal is at.
Fostering and volunteering
Fostering means a temporary home for an animal that is not ready for adoption yet, whether it is shy, recovering from surgery, or too young. The BC SPCA supplies food, supplies and medical care. Fosters, or the lead foster in a family, need to be 19 or older and live somewhere that allows pets. Placements run from a few days to a few months.
Volunteer roles range from dog walking and cat wellness at a centre to driving, photography, and virtual or admin work. Youth aged 16 to 18 can take part in some roles with a parent or guardian’s consent. Applications go through the BC SPCA’s volunteer site, linked from its volunteer page, and you finish onboarding before you start.
Giving
The BC SPCA describes itself as a not-for-profit that receives no government funding for its programs, and the Surrey centre page has a donate link. As with every charity page here, give through the organisation’s own site; we never link to personal fundraisers.
