Here is the practical rule for rural Langley: the school your child attends depends on the exact address, not on the name of the hamlet, and whether there is a bus seat depends on a separate distance test. Check both before you sign anything. SD35’s school locator is the tool, and it was being updated for fall 2026 when we looked, so recheck it if you are planning a 2027 move.
The district’s combined catchment map is dated September 2025. Rural catchments are large, and several listings that say “Otter”, “Salmon River” or “County Line” straddle two or three elementary catchments. For the Langley-wide registration steps and calendar, see our schools guide and the Langley School District page.
Which public schools serve rural addresses?
These are the schools the district map points to for the countryside. A school’s position tells you where to look, not who is assigned. Portable counts come from the district’s June 2024 facilities plan, which is more than two years old, so ask the school for current numbers. Each school name links to its BC Ministry of Education page.
| School | Grades and address | Notes | Portables, June 2024 |
|---|---|---|---|
| North Otter Elementary | K-7, 5370 248 St | Regular elementary for northern and central Otter and parts of eastern rural Langley | 1 |
| Peterson Road Elementary | K-7, 23422 47 Ave | Part of the Salmon River area and nearby countryside | Some rooms used for childcare |
| Wix-Brown Elementary | K-7, 23851 24 Ave | Central south-Langley catchment. Hosts Flying Kites childcare | 0 |
| Fort Langley Elementary | K-7, 8877 Bartlett St | Catchment reaches into the Glen Valley countryside | 1, plus childcare space |
| D.W. Poppy Secondary | 8-12, 23752 52 Ave | Secondary for the Poppy catchment. No separate middle school step | Capacity 1,125; about 63% used in 2023 |
| Glenwood Elementary | K-7, 20785 24 Ave | South-west rural and Campbell Valley addresses | 2 |
| Noel Booth Elementary | K-7, 20202 35 Ave | Brookswood edge. Late French immersion is offered in the district | 1, plus 2 childcare |
| Brookswood Secondary | 8-12, 20902 37A Ave | South-west secondary. French immersion, Advanced Placement and an equestrian academy are listed on school and district pages | Ask the school |
| Parkside Centennial Elementary | K-5, 3300 270 St | Northern Aldergrove and the eastern rural edge | 1 |
| Shortreed Community Elementary | K-5, 27330 28 Ave | Southern Aldergrove and south-east rural edge | 3, plus childcare and family services |
| Betty Gilbert Middle | 6-8, 26845 27 Ave | Middle school in the Aldergrove sequence | 2 plus a triple-wide modular |
| Aldergrove Community Secondary | 9-12, 26850 29 Ave | Secondary in that sequence | 2 plus 1 community-service portable |
Urban-edge schools can also matter if you are near a boundary. Some rural addresses fall into the Murrayville, Willoughby and Walnut Grove systems:
| School | Grades and address | Why you might check it |
|---|---|---|
| Douglas Park Community | K-5, 5409 206 St (City) | Western Milner and Glover-side addresses |
| James Hill Elementary | K-5, 22144 Old Yale Rd | Murrayville and farm-edge addresses |
| Langley Secondary | 9-12, 21405 56 Ave | Western rural-edge secondary. A 300-seat, 12-classroom addition opened in September 2026 |
| West Langley Elementary | K-7, 9403 212 St | Northern river-edge addresses |
| Topham Elementary | K-7, 21555 91 Ave | Adjacent Walnut Grove and West Langley addresses |
| Walnut Grove Secondary | 8-12, 8919 Walnut Grove Dr | Secondary for the Walnut Grove catchment, including its rural edge |
| Willoughby Elementary | K-5, 20766 80 Ave | Willoughby and Milner side. Ask the district about upcoming boundary changes |
Milner in particular sits near several catchment edges, so don’t assume every Milner address feeds the same school.
How does the school bus work?
For 2026-27, catchment-school students outside the walking limits ride free: 3.2 km for elementary and middle, 4.8 km for secondary. The district decides eligibility. A “courtesy rider” lives inside those limits and gets a seat only if there is space on an established route. The fee is $400 per student, up to $600 per family a year, and courtesy seats can stay unconfirmed until October or later. Programme-of-choice students are not eligible on the same basis.
To get on a route, complete SD35’s transportation registration, keep your child’s address current in MyEdBC, and email [email protected] for the stop and route. The district’s rider page explains the My Ride K-12 app. A public bus passing your driveway is not a school bus stop.
Walking and the roadside. The distance limit is an eligibility rule, not a safety certificate. Before you move, look at the road edge, ditch crossings, lighting and the walk to the stop. North Otter’s October 5, 2026 newsletter asked drivers not to stop in the travel lane at drop-off. We couldn’t find an audited list of safe walking routes for rural schools. Raise school-access concerns with the principal and road-design concerns with Township Engineering (604-532-7300).

Childcare, preschool and early years
Fraser Health’s April 2025 licensed list includes Flying Kites at Wix-Brown (23851 24 Ave) and Little Otters at North Otter (5370 248 St). Licensed capacity is not a vacancy count, so ask each provider about ages and days. Langley Forest School’s 2026-27 preschool page says applications are suspended and offers a waitlist. The province’s April 2026 $10-a-day list includes Fort Langley Learning Centre and Covenant Kids among nearby options, but confirm the exact programme and space. For more, see preschools and childcare.
After high school
Trinity Western University and Kwantlen Polytechnic University’s Langley campus are both in the Township: see Trinity Western University and the KPU Langley campus.
About school ratings
The BC Ministry’s school pages carry public data, and the Fraser Institute publishes its own school report cards using its own methods and varying years. We don’t rank schools. Look at them if they help, and visit the school.
